market-auction · 2026-04-27

Sotheby's has announced a packed spring 2022 auction calendar, starting with Master Week in New York from January 19 to 29, 2022, featuring works from the 14th to 19th centuries. The highlight is Sandro Botticelli's 'Man of Sorrows,' estimated to fetch high prices after his 'Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel' sold for over $92 million in January 2021. Infrared analysis revealed a hidden Madonna and Child beneath the painting. Other Italian masters include Giovanni Bellini's 'The Madonna and Child at a Ledge with an Apple' ($3-5 million) and Correggio's 'Saint Mary Magdalene Reading' ($4.5-5.5 million). Artemisia Gentileschi's 'Portrait of a Seated Lady, Possibly Caterina Savelli' ($2-3 million) and 'Susanna and the Elders' ($1.8-2.5 million) are also featured. Meanwhile, on March 2, 2022, Sotheby's London will hold a Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction starring René Magritte's 'L'Empire des Lumières,' painted in 1961 for Baroness Anne-Marie Gillion Crowet, daughter of Magritte's patron Pierre Crowet. The work, estimated at $60 million, will tour Los Angeles (Jan 11-14), New York (Jan 22-27), and Hong Kong (Feb 8-9) before London.
