Sotheby's Paris to Offer Magritte's La Valse Hésitation with €10-15M Estimate

Sotheby's will auction René Magritte's 1955 painting La Valse Hésitation in Paris on October 19, 2023, with a pre-sale estimate of €10-15 million, the highest ever for the auction house in France. The work, held in Belgian collections and unseen publicly since 1979, depicts two anthropomorphic apples in shadow against a cloudy daytime sky, synthesizing Magritte's iconic visual paradoxes from the 1950s. Before the sale, the painting will tour Brussels, New York, and London starting in September, returning to Paris for the Modernités auction during the art week centered on Paris+. The work is expected to be one of the most anticipated lots of the Paris fall sales.
