Sotheby's Milano Spring Sale Hits €11M, Led by Fontana and Morandi

Sotheby's Milan auction of modern and contemporary art on May 27, 2026, achieved €11 million, exceeding pre-sale estimates of €6.96-9.887 million. The sale, held live at Palazzo Serbelloni, saw an 89% sell-through rate by lot and 97.2% by value. Over 70% of lots were fresh to market, and more than half of buyers were international. Top lots included Lucio Fontana's 'Concetto Spaziale, Attese' (1965-66) at €1.8 million (estimate €700,000-1,000,000), Giorgio Morandi's 'Natura morta' (1959) at €1.6 million, and another Morandi from 1924 at €1.024 million. Other strong results: Mario Schifano's 'Botticelli 2' at €562,800, Fontana's 'Concetto Spaziale, Attesa' at €512,000, Salvo's 'Una sera' at €192,000, Leonardo Cremonini's 'Les horizons et les parcours' at €140,800, Carla Accardi's 'Arancio' at €128,000, and Antonio Donghi's 'La casa del vescovo' at €102,400. Marta Giani, Head of Modern & Contemporary Art at Sotheby's Milan, noted dynamic and highly competitive interest, especially for fresh-to-market works. Francesca Lumina, head of the Milan sale, described the market as solid and selective. The result aligns with the May 2025 sale that achieved €11.4 million.
