Sotheby's Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction in London on March 4, 2026, will feature a rare German private collection of seven Lucio Fontana works, including 'Concetto Spaziale' (1960, est. £8.5–12 million) and 'Teatrino' (1964, est. £350,000–450,000). The collection, formed between the 1950s and 1960s and held for over 60 years, also includes works by Sam Francis and Alberto Giacometti, with a combined estimate of around £15 million. Other top lots include Claude Monet's 'Maison de jardinier' (1884, est. £6.5–8.5 million), formerly in John Singer Sargent's collection; Lucian Freud's 'Blond Girl on a Bed' (1987, est. £6–8 million); Francis Bacon's 'Self Portrait' (1972, est. £8–12 million); David Hockney's 'English Garden' (1965); and Jean-Michel Basquiat's 'Thin in the old' (1986, est. from £6 million). Impressionist works by Monet, Signac, Léger, and Degas have a combined estimate of £17–24 million. The auction precedes other major sales in Hong Kong (late March), Paris (mid-April), and New York (May). Claudia Dwek, Chairman of Contemporary Art at Sotheby's, noted that collections of this caliber rarely emerge.
