Sotheby's Hong Kong white-glove sale totals HK$839 million
Sotheby's Hong Kong closed the Asian Sales season with a white-glove auction on June 18, 2021, selling all 47 lots for a total of HK$839 million (approx. €91 million). The sale was curated by Taiwanese pop star and collector Jay Chou, who also auctioned stage costumes to benefit Make a Wish International. Top lots included Jean-Michel Basquiat's Untitled (1985) at HK$289.3 million, Pablo Picasso's Buste d'homme (1969) at HK$108.9 million, and Frank Stella's Untitled (Double Concentric Square) (1978) at HK$42.3 million—a record for the artist in Asia. Richard Prince's Runaway Nurse (2005/06) sold for HK$94 million, Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin (1992) for HK$26.8 million, and Yoshitomo Nara's Untitled (2003) for HK$27.4 million. Young artists also set records: Jamian Juliano-Villani's Heat Wave (2013) reached HK$3.15 million, Loie Hollowell's Linked Lingams (2018) sold for HK$16.5 million, and Dana Schutz's Wrong Objects Saved for the Future (2005) fetched HK$15.9 million. Adrian Ghenie's Pie Fight Interior 9 (2013) achieved HK$26.8 million, and a work by Yukimasa Ida set a record.
