Sotheby's Global Headquarters at the Breuer: Herzog & de Meuron's Light-Touch Renovation

The Breuer building in New York City, now serving as Sotheby's global headquarters, has undergone a renovation led by Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with PBDW Architects. This project honors Marcel Breuer's original architectural vision while incorporating necessary enhancements for Sotheby's operations. The renovation process involved assessing spaces for both architectural significance and functional requirements, striking a balance between preservation and innovation. Structural engineering was provided by Silman Structural Solutions, while lighting was designed by Tillotson Design Associates and acoustic consulting was handled by Eligator Acoustics Associates. Key team members include Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, and others. Gardiner & Theobald Inc represented the owner, with MEPFP engineering by AMA Group USA, and photography by Stefan Ruiz and Max Touhey.
