SoteloMargalef Arquitectes transforms 1960s Barcelona apartment with fan-shaped layout

architecture-design · 2026-04-19

SoteloMargalef Arquitectes has radically reorganized a 1960s apartment in Barcelona's Sarrià-Sant Gervasi neighborhood. The corner unit at Vallmajor street, originally built in 1962, featured outdated compartmentalized layouts with long corridors and closed-off rooms that failed to maximize natural light. The architects implemented a fan-shaped distribution that opens the living space toward panoramic views of Montjuïc, the sea, and Sant Pere Màrtir mountain. Main living areas now occupy the perimeter with service spaces—kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry—concentrated in an interior strip around the patio and stairwell. Original elements including a brick, copper, and wood fireplace, railings, carpentry, and facade mosaics were preserved and integrated. The renovation uses Macael marble in bathrooms and a kitchen peninsula that doubles as a work surface, while laminated parquet covers main areas. Custom lacquered wood cabinetry conceals laundry facilities and storage. A sliding door with built-in shelving separates private sleeping quarters. Interior design incorporates the Barceloneta armchair by Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá alongside lighting from Wästberg and Marset. Photography was handled by Marta Vidal.
