Sorolla's Light: 46 Works from Masaveu Collection at Valencia's Museo de Bellas Artes
Valencia's Museo de Bellas Artes presents a major exhibition of Joaquín Sorolla featuring 46 paintings from the Masaveu Collection, the largest private holding of the artist's work. Curated by María Soto Cano, the show runs until October 1, 2023, and spans Sorolla's career from 1882 to 1917. The display uses Lina Bo Bardi's transparent glass easels, originally designed for São Paulo's Museum of Art in 1968, allowing visitors to see both front and back of canvases. Works include early pieces like a copy of Velázquez's portrait of Mariana de Austria (1884), social realist scenes such as El Mamón (1894), and later masterpieces like Mi mujer y mis hijas en el jardin and Familia de don Rafael Errázuriz Urmeneta, often called the modern Las Meninas. The exhibition is part of Spain's 2023 Year of Sorolla, marking the centenary of his death.
