Soriano Calabro museum director job: €500/month sparks outrage

other · 2026-04-27

The municipality of Soriano Calabro, a town of 3,000 in the Vibonese region, has published a call for a director of its Polo Museale offering a gross monthly salary of €500 for a three-year renewable contract, with no expense reimbursement except for agreed travel. The position requires a master's degree and preferably a PhD. The director must be present at least two days a week and during special openings and events without additional pay. Duties include defining the cultural project, drafting programmatic documents, organizing initiatives, coordinating monitoring and attendance, managing public services, directing staff, handling financial resources, and overseeing promotion and communication. The museum complex includes a Ceramics Museum, an Art Gallery, and the MUTERR (Virtual Earthquake Museum), unique in Italy, housed in a Dominican convent destroyed by the 1783 earthquake. The association Mi Riconosci criticized the speculative nature of the call, which has sparked nationwide controversy. The municipality has been under administration for mafia infiltration since June 2022.
