Sophie-Yen Bretez Explores Memory and Absence at JD Malat Gallery Dubai

Sophie-Yen Bretez, an artist based in Paris, showcases her solo exhibition titled 'The Unsaid Remains Remembered' at JD Malat Gallery in Dubai. This exhibition features striking, large-scale pieces and uniquely shaped canvases that delve into what Bretez describes as a 'dramaturgy of passage'—instances where spaces intersect, times merge, and memories endure. Common items such as windows, tables, and clocks serve as symbolic gateways between different states of existence. The interplay of changing skies, mountains, and seasons evokes a tension between personal intimacy and the vastness of nature. Bretez emphasizes that silence has substance, and memories linger in objects and landscapes. This exhibition represents a departure from her previous emphasis on female figures confronting the male gaze; vulnerability and presence are now expressed through everyday items.
