artist · 2026-04-27

Sophie, the Scottish-born DJ, producer, and singer known for her groundbreaking electronic music and transgender identity, died on January 30, 2021, in Athens at age 34. Her record label Transgressive announced on Twitter that she died after accidentally slipping while climbing to look at the moon. Born Sophie Xeon in Glasgow in 1986, she rose to prominence in 2013 with her debut single 'Nothing More to Say.' Her 2015 compilation 'Product' included 'Lemonade,' later used in a McDonald's ad. In 2017 she released the ballad 'It's Okay to Cry' with a self-directed video, and in 2018 her debut album 'Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides' came out. She was a regular at Turin's Club To Club festival. Neapolitan singer La Niña (Carola Moccia) called Sophie a key influence, praising her transformative art. Gender studies scholar Alessandro Cane, studying at SOAS London, noted Sophie used sound to express her transgender nature, seeing transsexuality as a struggle for balance between body and soul. Her music, he said, was activism and a political cry for visibility, culminating in the line 'I could be anything I want.'
