Sophie Usunier's #TalkingToTheUniverse Turns Words into Light Using Morse Code

digital · 2026-04-27

French artist Sophie Usunier, in collaboration with creative agency C41 and supported by lighting company Flos, has released a video titled #TalkingToTheUniverse. The project transforms spoken words into light signals using Morse code, the standard information encoding system patented in 1840. Designed for children but suitable for adults, the game involves using a lamp to convert words into light, turning homes into street-facing displays for communication. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative aims to foster solidarity and social connection despite physical isolation. Participants interact with neighbors, passersby, and family members, using a global communication standard that has historically overcome barriers and distances. The video was directed by Leone Balduzzi, with music by Gianluca Di Ienno, and project coordination by Rossana Ciocca.
