Sophie Rivera's first museum survey opens at El Museo del Barrio in 2026 with Aperture monograph
El Museo del Barrio will present the inaugural museum survey of photographer Sophie Rivera (1938–2021) starting April 23, 2026. Titled Sophie Rivera: Double Exposures, the exhibition provides a comprehensive reassessment of her impact on photography and Nuyorican visual culture. The show includes portraits, documentary work, experimental self-portraits, and images of the New York City subway system. A co-published monograph by El Museo del Barrio and Aperture accompanies the exhibition, featuring over 125 plates alongside Rivera's writings and new scholarship. This project recognizes Rivera's historical ties to the institution, where she curated exhibitions and had her first solo show in the 1980s.
