Sophie Calle's Paris Show Features 40 Musicians' Tribute to Her Cat
Sophie Calle's exhibition at Perrotin in Paris, running until December 22, 2018, comprises two projects: "Parce que" and "Souris Calle." The first presents a new photographic series where images are hidden behind embroidered curtains with texts beginning with "Parce que," explaining why each image exists. The second project, "Souris Calle," involves 40 musicians including Bono, Pharrell Williams, Jarvis Cocker, and Benjamin Biolay, who composed an album in memory of Calle's cat Souris, who died in 2014 at age 18. The compilation is available on three vinyl records and can be heard in alcoves within the gallery. The white space features photographs of Souris in white frames, accompanied by texts from the "Autobiographies" series. Curator Christine Macel notes that Calle's work continually redefines the idea of authorship through co-creation and palimpsests. The exhibition also references Calle's earlier works, such as "Suite ventienne" (1979), where she followed a stranger in Venice, and "Take Care of Yourself" (2007), a video installation at the Venice Biennale involving 107 women reading a breakup email.
