Sophie Calle Exhibition 'Something Missing?' Opens at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark is presenting a major exhibition titled 'Something Missing?' featuring French conceptual artist Sophie Calle. The show opens on 26 March and runs through 6 September, occupying the museum's West Wing with over 300 individual works including photographs, texts, and videos spanning nearly four decades of Calle's career. The exhibition includes seven major series alongside additional pieces, tracing her investigations into themes of absence, memory, perception, and human relationships. Key works on display include 'The Blind' (1986), recently acquired by the museum, which explores the visual imaginations of people born without sight; 'Because' (2018–2023) featuring embroidered text over photographs; 'Picassos in Lockdown' (2022) documenting paintings covered during the pandemic; 'On the Hunt' (2017–2024) juxtaposing hunting imagery with personal ads; and 'Voir la mer' (2011) recording individuals' first encounters with the sea. Born in Paris in 1953, Calle first gained attention in the late 1970s for projects blending photography, text, and autobiographical narrative. Her practice examines the boundaries between public and private life, often with poetic and humorous elements. The exhibition is curated by Tine Colstrup and includes an English-language catalogue with contributions from Laurie Anderson, Yve-Alain Bois, and Édouard Louis. Calle's work has been exhibited internationally, with previous solo shows at Louisiana Museum including 'Take Care of Yourself' in 2010. Her conceptual approach has influenced contemporary artists exploring similar themes of presence, absence, and narrative construction.
