Sophia Al Maria's First Major Middle East Exhibition at Mathaf

Sophia Al Maria, a Qatari American artist born in 1983, is showcasing her inaugural large-scale museum exhibition in the Middle East at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha. The exhibition, titled 'INVISIBLE LABORS daydream therapy,' incorporates multimedia elements such as installations, video, and specially commissioned soundscapes. Al Maria, known for coining the term 'Gulf Futurism,' encourages dialogue among artists, curators, scholars, and communities regarding histories, dreams, futures, and regional relations within the Gulf. The focus of the exhibition is on storytelling as a means of survival, imagination, and narrative reclamation. Curated by Amal Al Haag in collaboration with Mathaf's assistant curator Abdulrahman Mohammed Alkubaisi, this exhibition is part of the Qatar-MENASA 2022 Year of Culture program.
