Sook-Kyung Lee named artistic director of 14th Gwangju Biennale
Sook-Kyung Lee has been named the artistic director for the 14th Gwangju Biennale, scheduled from 7 April to 9 July 2023. She marks the first Korean-born curator to helm the event since Kim Hong-hee in 2006. Lee, who has resided in the UK since the late 1990s, began her professional journey at Tate Liverpool and subsequently joined Tate's research center. Currently at the Hyundai Tate Research Centre, she has curated a Nam June Paik retrospective (now touring at National Gallery Singapore) and 'A Year in Art: Australia 1992' at Tate Modern. While the theme remains undisclosed, Lee emphasized it will reflect the 'spirits of the city' and focus on a 'non-Western perspective' addressing issues such as race, class conflicts, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The last biennale, overseen by Defne Ayas and Natasha Ginwala, took place from 1 April to 9 May 2021.
