Sook-Kyung Lee Appointed Director of Manchester's Whitworth Gallery from Tate Modern

Sook-Kyung Lee will assume leadership of Manchester's Whitworth gallery in August 2023, departing her position at London's Tate Modern where she served as senior curator of international art. At Tate, she curated the widely traveled Nam June Paik exhibition from 2019 to 2020 and played a key role in developing the institution's international collection strategy through initiatives like the Asia Pacific Acquisitions Committee. Since 2019, Lee has also directed the Hyundai Tate Research Centre, a significant partnership with Hyundai Motor. Her recent curatorial work includes serving as artistic director for the 14th Gwangju Biennale, which launched in April. In her new role, Lee will also hold the title of Honorary Professor of Transcultural Curating at the University of Manchester, which oversees the Whitworth. She expressed admiration for the gallery's dedication to community engagement and using art to drive social change. Lee aims to enhance the institution's artistic standards and global connections while deepening its social impact.
