Sony's Affordable 100-400mm f/5.6-8 OSS Lens Review: Competent but Unremarkable

Sony has introduced the FE 100-400mm f/5.6-8 OSS, an affordable telephoto zoom lens retailing at $850. This marks the second 100-400mm lens from Sony in 2026, following the high-end FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM that debuted in May alongside the a7R VI. Weighing in at 654 grams and measuring 164.5mm, the lens boasts a design resistant to dust and moisture, along with autofocus range controls and Optical SteadyShot stabilization. The maximum aperture is f/5.6 at 100mm, decreasing to f/8 at 220mm. While image quality is decent, it doesn’t stand out, and autofocus is satisfactory. It is compatible with Sony's teleconverters, though their use is not recommended. Competing lenses include Sigma's ($1,049) and Tamron's ($1,299). The review suggests it is a solid option for photographers on a budget.
