Sony Reportedly Offers $1.22 Billion to Acquire Lens Maker Tamron

Sony Group has reportedly made a 200 billion yen ($1.22 billion) offer to fully acquire Tamron, a Japanese lens manufacturer that produces over 20 lenses for Sony's E-mount mirrorless cameras. The report, published by Japanese outlet Diamond, gains credibility from Sony's existing 15.35% stake in Tamron, making it the largest shareholder until recently. Singaporean investment firm Effissimo Capital Management aggressively expanded its ownership from under 11% to nearly 17.4%, surpassing Sony. This move may have spurred Sony to pursue a full takeover. Tamron's E-mount lens lineup benefits Sony by providing affordable options for consumers, allowing Sony to focus on high-margin G Master lenses. Acquiring Tamron would give Sony control over lens manufacturing, potentially limiting lens availability for competitors like Nikon, Canon, and Fujifilm. Tamron also has the largest market share among third-party lens makers and produces OEM lenses for other brands. The acquisition value is less than 1% of Sony Group's market cap, making it a relatively low-risk investment. No deal is official, and PetaPixel notes that acquisitions can fall through even at the last minute. Sony did not comment on the report.
