Sony FX5 Camera Shipments Delayed to Mid-September

The Sony FX5 professional camcorder, originally scheduled to ship in mid-August, has been delayed by at least a month. Multiple North American dealers report that Sony has not yet shipped FX5 units to their inventory, and retailers have received notes from Sony indicating delays without providing a reason. The new expected arrival window is mid-September, though not all retailers have received a revised ETA. On July 28, Sony Japan issued a notice stating that orders for the FX5 had greatly exceeded expectations, but this does not explain the lack of shipments. Unconfirmed rumors cited by Red Shark News suggest possible quality control issues delaying shipments from Japan. Additionally, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28, the same day as Sony's notice, causing significant damage and temporarily shutting down Sony's largest image sensor plant. The Kumamoto Technology Center, operated by Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, resumed operations in stages beginning August 4, 2026, and is expected to return to pre-earthquake operating levels by mid-August 2026. However, full operations may not have resumed immediately, potentially impacting FX5 order fulfillment. PetaPixel reached out to Sony for comment but did not receive a response before publication.
