Sony Announces 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS Telephoto Zoom Lens
Sony has launched the FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS, a high-end telephoto zoom lens aimed at wildlife, sports, and photojournalism enthusiasts. Notably, this is the first G Master lens to forgo the “Mark II” designation. It boasts a constant f/4.5 aperture, which is two-thirds of a stop quicker at the telephoto end compared to its forerunner, the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS. The lens employs an inner-zoom mechanism to prevent length changes while zooming. Its optical performance is bolstered by two Super ED elements, a new ED XA element, one XA lens, three standard ED glasses, and Nano AR Coating II. The circular aperture with 11 blades ensures pleasing bokeh. Autofocus improvements include four XD Linear Motors, offering speeds up to three times faster and 50% better tracking. Close focusing is possible at 0.64m at 100mm and 1.5m at 400mm, with a magnification of 0.25x. Weighing 1,840g and measuring 119.8mm in diameter and 328mm in length at 400mm, it is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. Other features include four Focus Hold buttons, a rotating tripod collar, an assignable function ring, and a design resistant to dust and moisture. The lens will be available for shipping in early June, priced at $4,299.99 in the U.S. and $5,599.99 in Canada.
