Sonia Kacem's 'Night Shift' at CAC Geneva
Swiss-Tunisian artist Sonia Kacem (born 1985, Geneva) presents 'Night Shift' at the Centre d'Art Contemporain (CAC) in Geneva, running until August 14, 2016. The exhibition features two large installations. On the lower floor, four pairs of faux Doric columns, rented from the Théâtre Courege, lie on the floor atop a carpet of wood dust titled 'Poussier de bois'. These elements evoke grandeur and decay, reflecting Kacem's interest in found, rough materials. Upstairs, a giant black plastic sheet divides the space, forcing viewers to contort their bodies or use smartphones to see hidden assemblages of found objects (e.g., bed headboards) and reconstructed items (e.g., enlarged lampshade skeletons). A separate work, 'Abbraccio', pairs a plastic sheet with a fabric sheet of the same gray tone, creating an emotional climax. Kacem's practice transforms construction waste into abstract forms, referencing the ancient Greek theatrical concept of catastrophe as resolution. The exhibition is curated by Nicola Davide Angerame.
