Sonia Delaunay retrospective at Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris explores seven-decade abstraction journey

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From October 17, 2014, to February 22, 2015, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris showcases 'Sonia Delaunay: Les Couleurs de l’Abstraction.' The exhibit highlights her first pure abstraction, a 1911 baby blanket made for her son Charles, composed of 70 fabric pieces and inspired by color theories from her husband Robert Delaunay and chemist Michel Eugene Chevreul. Covering her entire artistic journey, it includes early portraits influenced by Gauguin and the Fauves, her Orphism phase with Robert, and late works into the 1970s. Delaunay's diverse practice encompassed fashion, including the 1925 Manteau pour Gloria Swanson, and a 1937 mural for the Exposition Internationale. The Tate Modern will feature the exhibition from April 15 to August 9, 2015. Delaunay passed away in 1979 at 94, consistently exploring circular forms, with later pieces like L'Affereux Jojo (1947) and Triptyque (1963) reflecting darker tones.
