SoMI maps Milan's musical tastes via social media at BASE Milano

digital · 2026-05-05

The interactive installation SoMI – The Sounds of Milan, created by Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico of HER – Human Ecosystems Relazioni, maps real-time musical preferences of Milanese residents by analyzing public conversations on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. The project was presented at Visualized Milan, a conference series on information design launched in 2012 in New York by Eric Klotz, now in its third European edition. The installation uses the Human Ecosystems system installed at BASE Milano. Giovanni Pesce of BASE Milano explained that the tool can study the evolution of live music in Milan, with initial visualizations due in April. Oriana Persico announced that from April, Milano HeartBit will monitor the city's musical 'heartbeat' monthly, tracking genres and emotions expressed in conversations, aiming to create a new-generation cultural observatory. The installation was exceptionally open to the public on Sunday, March 12, at BASE Milano.
