Somalia's First Venice Biennale Pavilion Faces Backlash Over Diaspora-Only Artist Selection
The inaugural Somali pavilion at the Venice Biennale, titled SADDEXLEEY, has sparked controversy for exclusively featuring diaspora artists, excluding those based in Somalia. The Somalia Arts Foundation (SAF) and other cultural organizations accuse organizers of failing to consult local artists. The pavilion's co-curator, Italian graphic designer Fabio Scrivanti, has been criticized for colonial implications given Italy's colonial history in Somalia. Participating artists include painter Ayan Farfah, poet and filmmaker Asmaa Jama, and writer Warsan Shire, all residing abroad. The pavilion is curated by Scrivanti with Mohamed Mire of Fotografiska Stockholm, and the official commission is led by Abdirahman Yusuf Mohamud, cultural advisor to the Somali Prime Minister. The exhibition focuses on orality, displacement, and memory. SAF also alleges intimidation against critics. Organizers claim Somali-based artist Abdinasir Abdikadir (4C) will participate in parallel events. Poet and filmmaker Ladan Osman announced she will not visit the pavilion, citing concerns over the selection process. The controversy adds to a turbulent Biennale edition marked by protests over Israel's participation amid the Gaza war.
