Solo Houses: Architecture, Art, and Nature Converge in Spain

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

Solo Houses is a unique European project blending architecture, art, and landscape in the Matarraña region of Teruel, Spain. Founded by gallerists Christian Bourdais and Eva Albarrán, it comprises vacation homes designed as site-specific artworks by renowned architects. Since 2019, the 80-hectare natural park hosts the Solo Summer Group Show, an open-air contemporary art exhibition with nine works by international artists including Ugo Rondinone, Olivier Mosset, Iván Argote, Héctor Zamora, Fernando Sánchez-Castillo, Christian Boltanski, and Peter Downsbrough. The installations, many large-scale and for sale, are temporary and placed in dialogue with nature. Notable pieces include Boltanski's 'Animitas' (2014) with 500 Japanese bells, Rondinone's fluorescent pink stone triangle 'Kissing the Void' (2012), and Sánchez-Castillo's bronze barricade 'Evento Bordeaux' (2010). The project also features architectural works by studios like Pezo von Ellrichshausen (Solo Pezo) and Office KGDVS (Solo Office). Future plans include 15 additional projects by architects such as Hasegawa, Johnston Marklee, and Fujimoto, with construction starting in late 2020. The show is free and open until November 30, 2019, by appointment.
