Solange Pessoa's Unseen Works Fill Itaú Cultural Across Three Floors
Solange Pessoa's exhibition 'outras escalas. Desenhos, filmes e instalação' opens at Itaú Cultural in São Paulo on August 4, 2026, at 7:30 PM, running through November 1. Curated by Franklin Espath Pedroso, the show spans three floors and features around 150 never-before-seen drawings, 10 experimental films, and an installation derived from 'Campos peregrinos', first presented at Tramway in Glasgow in 2025. This marks the first time her audiovisual work is gathered in a single exhibition. The installation on the first floor incorporates bronze, ceramic, and natural materials like capim-membeca, paina, and fubá, evoking the Brazilian cerrado. A new film 'Desjardim', created with filmmaker João Vargas Penna and musician Livio Tragtenberg, premieres on the same floor. The -1 level displays intimate small-scale drawings from the 1990s onward, using pigments, charcoal, oil, jenipapo, clay, urucum, Merthiolate, and fat. The -2 floor presents a chronology and nine experimental films, many showing matter transformation and bodily performance. Pessoa, born in Ferros, Minas Gerais in 1961, has gained international traction: she will participate in the Toronto Biennial in September 2026, open a solo show at Fundación Botín in Spain in October, and has been invited for a major exhibition at Fondation Cartier in France in 2027.
