Sol LeWitt and McArthur Binion's Geometric Dialogue in Milan
Massimo De Carlo in Milan presents an unprecedented dialogue between American artists Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) and McArthur Binion (b. 1946), running until February 5, 2022. The exhibition juxtaposes LeWitt's Wall Drawing #357, reproduced on the wall of Casa Corbellini-Wasserman, with Binion's Modern:Ancient:Brown and healing:work series. LeWitt's work uses four elementary graphic signs combined according to card suit instructions, creating similar but unique reproductions. Binion's grids incorporate personal documents like phone books and birth certificates, with improvisation inspired by jazz confined to the margins. LeWitt's Horizontal Progression (1991) reflects New York skyscrapers' tapering due to zoning laws, combined with a ziggurat form. Binion's Altar, created for the Museo Novecento chapel in 2020, echoes architectural and spiritual themes. LeWitt's wall drawings were influenced by early Renaissance frescoes by Filippo Lippi, Giotto, and Piero della Francesca, leading him to use colored ink directly on walls. Wall Drawing #589 challenges architectural boundaries. Binion's DNA series uses private documents as abstract subconscious bases for layered geometric forms, explicitly expressing his African American experience. He founded the Modern:Ancient:Brown foundation to encourage minority expression.
