Sohrab Hura's film The Coast explores ritual and transformation in Tamil Nadu

artist · 2026-04-20

Sohrab Hura's 2020 film The Coast documents post-festival scenes along Tamil Nadu's shoreline. The 17-minute, 27-second work presents visceral narratives of ritual offerings and physical endurance. A protagonist describes sacrificing body parts to deities during religious processions featuring Nadaswaram music and Urumi performances. Another perspective follows women experiencing the sea's currents while wearing saris and jasmine flowers. Hura's accompanying text questions binary worldviews through these encounters with nature. The photographer, based in New Delhi, currently has his exhibition Spill showing at Experimenter in Kolkata until January 2. Film stills from The Coast are available through an online viewing room.
