Soft Crash's Debut Album Blends Italo Body Music with Techno and Dancefloor

Soft Crash, the collaborative project between Hayden Payne (Phase Fatale) and Pablo Bozzi, released their debut album 'Your Last Everything' in late October 2022. The album stands out for its unique combination of genres from the 1980s and 1990s, particularly Italo Body Music—a term coined by Bozzi to describe his fusion of EBM and Italo disco with modern production. Unlike typical Berghain-style techno, the album prioritizes narrative and atmosphere, telling a tragic sci-fi love story through its tracks and titles. Payne described the creative process as slow and layered, with some tracks worked on for over a year. The duo aimed to balance dancefloor-oriented pieces with slower, more melancholic moods, drawing influences from synthwave, synth pop, goth, and cyberpunk culture, including anime like 'Ghost in the Shell' and 'Akira'. Payne noted that while nostalgia is prevalent in contemporary music, their approach is about combining elements in new ways. The album also reflects Payne's interest in how frequencies affect the body and mind, though he emphasized the technical focus on mixing and layering. Soft Crash began with the 2020 EP 'Spritzkrieg', which was more dancefloor-focused, while the album expands into broader sonic territory.
