Sociological Survey of Contemporary Art Curators in France

publication · 2026-04-23

A 2008 sociological survey led by Laurent Jeanpierre and Séverine Sofio, commissioned by the association Commissaires d'exposition associés, provides the first statistical portrait of contemporary art curators in France. Based on over 800 responses, the study reveals that curating is increasingly practiced, driven by cultural policies since the mid-1980s that established FRACs, art centers, and art schools nationwide. The majority of curators are under 45 (70%), from middle and upper classes (over 75%), and more often women (56%) than artists. However, the profession is economically precarious: fewer than 50 individuals earn a living solely from curating, and only 7% earn over €20,000 annually from it. Three subgroups emerge: an elite of salaried curators (museum curators, art center directors), independent curators (under 35, Paris-based, precarious), and artist-curators (often provincial, unpaid). The study also addresses debates over the term 'curateur' versus 'commissaire', the claim of authorship by some curators, and the tension between artists and curators. It notes the rise of specialized training programs, archives like the Curating Degree Zero Archive, and publications such as Manifesta Journal. The survey concludes that curating remains a vocation with low recognition, and that future challenges include distinguishing curatorial styles and fostering new alliances with artists.
