SocialEast Forum Examines Eastern European Art from WWII to Berlin Wall Fall

institutional · 2026-04-19

The SocialEast research forum explores the realm of Eastern European art and visual culture from 1945 to 1989 through various collaborative initiatives, exhibitions, and seminars. In 2006-2007, international seminars focused on topics such as Art and Ideology and Art and Memory, featuring contributions from artists and scholars across Europe and the US. The second seminar, titled "Art and Documentary," took place at the Ludwig Museum Budapest on February 10, 2007, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. Discussions centered on how contemporary art reflects on socialist-era commemorations. A film screening, 'Socialist Memory: Documentary Approaches in Contemporary Art,' was organized by Maja and Reuben Fowkes. The concluding seminar, "Art and Memory," is scheduled for April 21, 2007, at the Mimera Museum in Zagreb, with participants including Reuben Fowkes, Lynda Morris, Anton Lederer, Éva Forgács, and János Sugár. The proceedings will be available on ARTMargins Online.
