Sobey Art Award doubles prize money to $100,000
The Sobey Art Award, started in 2002 and managed by the National Gallery of Canada, is making headlines with a significant increase in its prize money for the 2018 awards. Thanks to the Donald R. Sobey Foundation's contribution, the top prize has jumped from $50,000 to $100,000. Meanwhile, the four artists on the shortlist will now each receive $25,000, up from $10,000. Additionally, the twenty long-listed artists will get an increased amount of $2,000. The foundation is also launching three fully-funded residencies for some long-listed artists, including one in partnership with Fogo Island Arts in Newfoundland, with two more locations outside Canada yet to be announced. This award aims to support Canadian artists under 40.
