Snøhetta's Spiral Shanghai Grand Opera House Nears Completion for 2026 Opening
The Shanghai Grand Opera House, designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, is nearing completion with interior finishing underway for a public opening in the second half of 2026. Located in Shanghai's Houtan district along the Huangpu River, the 147,000 m² building features a striking white helical silhouette inspired by Chinese fans. Its spiral roof functions as an accessible public walkway, blurring boundaries between cultural institution and urban space. The project, won through an international competition in 2017, includes three flexible performance halls (one seating 2,000), galleries, libraries, restaurants, and exhibition spaces. Interior materials contrast the exterior's concrete, glass, and steel with warm oak wood and silk-inspired textiles. Night lighting will transform the structure into an urban lantern. Snøhetta collaborated with East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI), Theatre Projects, and Nagata Acoustics on the consortium project. The opera house aims to attract diverse audiences with programming ranging from traditional Chinese opera and classical concerts to experimental performances. This development is part of Shanghai's cultural strategy to compete with global art capitals. Snøhetta's previous notable works include Oslo Opera House (2008 Mies-van-der-Rohe award winner), Lascaux IV (2016), Le Monde headquarters in Paris (2020), Carnavalet Museum renovation (2021), and Musée National de la Marine transformation (2023).
