Snøhetta Clads Aesop Sydney Store in Pavement Granite

Snøhetta has completed Aesop's Pitt Street store in Sydney, using granite quarried from the city's own pavements rather than the sandstone typical of the area. The Oslo-founded architecture practice designed the interior to evoke a relationship between Bondi Beach's tranquility and downtown Sydney's energy. The granite cladding, hand-chiselled by a local stonemason, features horizontal bridge-saw ridges and visible fault-lines, creating a texture between natural and ordered. The entrance is set back to act as a decompression chamber from the busy street. Shelving is carved directly into the granite, and a stainless-steel counter anchors the center. The store includes communal sinks for demonstrations and a hidden amphitheater with a screen. The design references Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 1968–69 Wrapped Coast. This is Snøhetta's eighth Aesop store, following a decade-long pattern of pairing a single found material with a single place. A separate fragrance space, the Aesop Sensorium added in 2021, breaks from the granite palette with pink surfaces and an arched entrance. The store opened in 2019 at 188 Pitt Street.
