Snapchat and Louvre Launch Egypt Augmented AR Experience
Snapchat and the Louvre Museum have partnered to create 'Egypt Augmented', an augmented reality experience focused on the museum's Egyptian antiquities. Visitors can scan QR codes on exhibit labels with their phones or Snapchat's camera to activate AR features, available for one year. The project involves the Department of Egyptian Antiquities and the Cour Carré courtyard. Snapchat's AR Studio, established in Paris in 2021, developed the initiative to revitalize artworks using AR technology. Donatien Bozon, director of Snapchat's AR Studio, stated the studio aims to educate and inspire about AR in art and culture. Laurence des Cars, director of the Louvre, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting how new technologies support the museum's mission. The experience includes 3D reconstructions of spaces, virtual restoration of colors and decorations, and a virtual installation of the Luxor Obelisk in the Cour Carré. Snapchatters can also use a facial lens to virtually wear ancient Egyptian funerary masks.
