Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art unveils Pahari paintings from Himalayan kingdoms

A new exhibition titled “Of the Hills: Pahari Paintings from India’s Himalayan Kingdoms” has just opened at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art. It will be on display from April 18, 2026, to July 26, 2026. The exhibit showcases 48 pieces, including famous works and some never seen before, highlighting the unique blend of local and wider artistic traditions. Debra Diamond, the curator for South and Southeast Asian Art, described the pieces as “swoon-worthy.” These artworks, dating back to around 1630, were created for various small Hindu kingdoms in the Himalayas and are celebrated for their detailed designs, vibrant hues, and lifelike figures.
