SMACH Biennale 2025: Art Trekking in the Dolomites
The SMACH Biennale (San Martin Art Culture History) returns to the Dolomites from July 12 to September 14, 2025, with the theme of the whetstone ("cu" in Ladin), a tool used for millennia to sharpen scythes. Ten artists were selected by a jury including Zasha Colah (curator of Berlin Biennale 2025 and co-director of Ar/Ge Kunst in Bolzano), Jasmine Deporta (artist based in Lausanne and Bolzano), Emanuele Masi (artistic director of Equilibri Festival in Rome and production director of Haydn Foundation of Bolzano), Peter Senoner (artist in Bolzano), and Stefan Sagmeister (designer in New York). Works are installed along trails in Val Badia, accessible only on foot. Highlights include .arexport by Carmine Auricchio, Jonathan Coen, and Moritz Knopp (Italy/Germany) at Medalghes; With Every Step by Hans De Backer aka Drukdoenerij (Belgium) at Tamersc; CU X Mission by Luca Rossi (Italy) at Lago Lunch; and Sway by Lola Giuffré (Australia) at Armentara meadows. An eleventh satellite project is realized with Kronplatz-Plan de Corones and Lumen Museum of Mountain Photography. Selected works may enter the permanent collection SMACH Val dl’Ert in San Martino in Badia, a 25-hectare sculpture park adjacent to Museum Ladin, open year-round with free admission, already housing 27 works from previous editions. Holimites offers 4-day, 3-night trekking packages with hut stays.
