Sleep in a Hopper Painting at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

exhibition · 2026-05-04

On October 26, 2019, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond will unveil 'Edward Hopper and the American Hotel,' showcasing more than 60 pieces by Edward Hopper, which encompass paintings, drawings, watercolors, and illustrations. This marks the inaugural exhibition dedicated to Hopper's hotel-centric artwork. A standout feature is the 'Hopper Hotel Experience,' allowing guests to spend the night in a life-like replica of Hopper's 1957 work 'Western Motel.' The museum will provide packages that include dinner at Amuse restaurant, a guided tour by a curator, and an exhibition catalog, with booking details to be revealed by the end of September. The exhibition also presents 35 pieces from other American artists, such as Richard Caton Woodville and Cindy Sherman, reflecting hotel and travel culture from the early 20th century to the present. Diaries from Hopper's wife, Josephine, chronicling their journeys, will also be displayed. The exhibition will be available until February 23, 2020.
