Slam Jam Archive Opens as Digital and Physical Cultural Resource
Slam Jam, a key player in street culture since 1989, has opened its archive of over 20,000 items to the public. Founded by Luca Benini, the archive is housed at the company's headquarters in Ferrara, designed by Diener & Diener Architekten, and is also accessible online through a visual atlas created by Turin-based multidisciplinary studio Nationhood, led by Achille Filipponi and Matteo Milaneschi. The collection includes more than 10,000 records, clothing, sneakers, accessories, artworks (paintings, sculptures, photographs), digital media (hard drives, floppy disks, DVDs), designer toys, material samples, and family and company albums. The project, initiated by Giulia Benini, aims to reinterpret this organic collection as a cultural resource for an anthropology of look. Nationhood's work involved three phases: decomposition, interpretation, and communication, creating connections between seemingly disparate objects. The online platform features a vertical scroll interface, allows users to create groups, drag elements, and share screenshots, with compositions downloadable for consultation. The brutalist aesthetic reflects the brand's attitude and the commercial context. Music from the vinyl collection plays a key role, echoing Benini's history as a DJ and the sampling techniques behind Slam Jam's brand selection. The archive is continuously being cataloged, with plans to return this heritage to the territory and new generations.
