Sky's Art Films: Immersive Cinema Meets Italian Cultural Heritage

digital · 2026-05-05

Since 2013, Sky has been producing art documentaries that combine cutting-edge technology with Italian cultural heritage, under the direction of Cosetta Lagani. The project began with 'Musei Vaticani 3D', which used pioneering 3D and dimensionalization techniques to immerse viewers in the Sistine Chapel. The film was a critical and commercial success, leading to a partnership with Nexo Digital for theatrical distribution. Subsequent films include 'Firenze e gli Uffizi', 'San Pietro e le Basiliche Papali di Roma', and 'Raffaello – Il Principe delle Arti'. Two new productions are in the works: 'Caravaggio, l’anima e il sangue' (shot in 8K, directed by Jesus Garces Lambert, with scientific consultancy by Claudio Strinati) and 'Michelangelo – Infinito' (directed by Emanuele Imbucci, starring Enrico Lo Verso as Michelangelo and Ivano Marescotti as Giorgio Vasari). The films have achieved top box office rankings in Italy and have been successful in France, UK, Australia, Colombia, and recently debuted in ten major Chinese cities. Each film takes 18-24 months to produce and involves a balance of scientific authority, cinematic narrative, and technological innovation. The project aims to create a new genre of 'art film' that educates and entertains, leveraging technologies like 4K, 8K, and VR.
