Sky Arts Launches Fake! The Great Masterpiece Challenge to Spot Forgeries

Sky Arts has launched a television program titled Fake! The Great Masterpiece Challenge, which challenges viewers to identify fake artworks among genuine masterpieces. The initiative aims to encourage closer observation of art in museums and galleries, as studies show visitors spend an average of only 30 seconds per artwork, much of that reading labels. The competition began on July 2 and runs until August 1, featuring seven fake paintings inserted into prestigious collections across the UK. Participating museums include the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the National Museum in Cardiff, the Guildhall Art Gallery in London, the Manchester Art Gallery, the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, Wirral, and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Participants can engage in person or online via the website, where virtual galleries also contain fakes. Ten finalists will compete in a live broadcast finale, with the winner receiving a perfect copy of an English masterpiece valued at £5,000. Phil Edgar-Jones, director of Sky Arts, stated that one does not need to be an art historian to participate, only curiosity and an eye for detail.
