Sky Arte Series 'Valorose' Profiles Six Courageous Women

other · 2026-05-04

Sky Arte's new series 'Valorose,' created and hosted by Serena Dandini, premieres Friday, October 18. The six-episode program highlights six historical female figures who defied patriarchal constraints, with each episode featuring a contemporary guest who relates to the subject. The first episode pairs journalist Nellie Bly with Barbara Stefanelli and filmmaker Alice Guy with actress Valeria Golino. Bly, the first female investigative reporter, famously had herself committed to a psychiatric hospital to expose abuses, documented in 'Ten Days in a Madhouse,' leading to state reforms. She also circumnavigated the globe alone in record time, inspired by Jules Verne, and later became a war correspondent in Austria at nearly 60. Alice Guy, the first female film director, started as a secretary at Gaumont. Inspired by the Lumière brothers, she directed over 1,000 films, pioneering special effects before Méliès, and founded her own production company in the US, becoming the first female producer. The series airs on Sky Arte, whose digital content is managed by Artribune.
