Sky Arte documentary 'Tumaranké' gives voice to young migrants

other · 2026-05-04

The documentary 'Tumaranké' will air on Sky Arte on Monday, August 19. The title, from the Bambara language, means 'one who travels in search of a better future.' The film is the result of the Re-future project, a year-long workshop in image education and filmmaking for a group of minors, aimed at raising awareness and stimulating their perspective on reality while teaching them to use smartphones more consciously. The young 'travelers' are the protagonists, with 38 emotional testimonies about their lives in Italy, their communities, new friendships, dreams, fragilities, moments of solitude, homesickness, and integration into a new country. The film conveys a message of hope for an inclusive culture and a shared future. Among the participants: Mor, a 17-year-old from Gambia, films himself writing a diary to show his future children; Ahmed, from Ivory Coast, documents his friends, school lessons, and life in Ortigia; Lamin, from Guinea, now works in an electronics repair shop and films himself fixing a smartphone and formatting a computer. The editing was done by Marta Tagliavia and Camilla Paternò, working from nearly 1,000 videos made by the youths over the year. Camilla Paternò noted: 'For digital natives, video and social media are a technological extension of knowledge. Minor migrants straddle two worlds, have incredible stories behind them, and like all adolescents need to gradually redefine their identity.'
