Sky Arte documentary series 'Dance – Why We Dance' premieres April 29

digital · 2026-05-04

Sky Arte launches a new international documentary series 'Dance – Why We Dance' on April 29, curated and presented by acclaimed Anglo-Bengali choreographer Akram Khan. The five-episode series explores dynamic dance forms across five continents, from suburban streets to major stages. The first episode 'Stories' follows Khan traveling between India and Denmark, examining how cultures use dance to narrate experiences. Featured choreographers include Christian Spuck, artistic director of Ballet Zurich, who opens his studio for rehearsals of his new 'Nutcracker'; Alexei Ratmansky, who revived the original 1895 'Swan Lake' in 2016; Franco-Albanian Angelin Preljocaj, who created a dark Freudian 'Snow White'; Indian Kathak choreographer Aditi Mangaldas, inspired by dark Indian mythology; and English choreographer Wayne McGregor, who reimagines storytelling in 'Tree of Codes' staged in Copenhagen. The series is available in full on Sky on Demand.
