Sky Arte Documentary Revives Forgotten Black Cinema Pioneer Oscar Micheaux
A new documentary, "Oscar Micheaux. Il supereroe del cinema americano" directed by Francesco Zippel, airs on Sky Arte on Sunday, January 15, 2023, resurrecting the legacy of Oscar Micheaux, a pioneering African American filmmaker who wrote, directed, and produced over 44 films and six novels. Micheaux, who died in 1951 and was largely forgotten until the late 1980s, was the first to offer a different vision of American society amid racist and segregationist oppression. His work spanned silent and sound films, and he used cinema to spread his message across the United States. The documentary explores key locations in his life—from rural Illinois to early 20th-century Chicago, the plains of South Dakota, and Harlem—and features interviews with figures like John Singleton, Kevin Willmott, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Morgan Freeman, and Amma Asante. To honor his cultural legacy, Micheaux's film "Murder in Harlem" has been restored for the first time in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna and the George Eastman House in Rochester. Only four photographs and about ten of his over forty films survive. Micheaux is also commemorated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
