Sky Arte Documentary on Fernanda Pivano's Life and Legacy

Sky Arte will air the documentary 'Fernanda Pivano ‒ L’altra America' on Friday, July 15, 2022, celebrating the life of the Italian writer, translator, and nonconformist intellectual. Born in Genoa, Pivano moved to Turin with her family, where she studied under Cesare Pavese. Her thesis in American literature sparked a lifelong focus on U.S. culture, introducing Italian audiences to authors from Hemingway to the Beat Generation. She produced the first Italian translation of Edgar Lee Masters' 'Spoon River Anthology' and later helped Fabrizio De André adapt it into the album 'Non al denaro non all’amore né al cielo.' The documentary features interviews with writers like Hemingway and Kerouac, as well as singer-songwriters Vasco Rossi and Vinicio Capossela, whom Pivano considered contemporary poets. It also covers her arrest under fascism for translating Hemingway's 'A Farewell to Arms' and her alternative press project 'Pianeta Fresco.' Her relationship with designer Ettore Sottsass is highlighted, as they opened her home to intellectuals and artists, fostering new talent.
