Sky Arte Documentary: Hitler vs Picasso and the Nazi Art Purge

A documentary titled 'Hitler contro Picasso e gli altri' airs Tuesday, September 25 on Sky Arte, reconstructing one of the darkest chapters of the Nazi regime: the ban on so-called 'degenerate art'. The film traces back to 1937, when an exhibition branded works disliked by the regime, which were later auctioned to fund purchases of art favored by the Nazis, labeled 'pure Aryan art' and showcased in the 'Great Exhibition of German Art'. Narrated by Toni Servillo, the documentary details Hitler's actions against timeless masterpieces, from public ridicule of degenerate art to large-scale looting of ancient and modern artifacts across Europe. It also unveils the 'Gurlitt Dossier' for the first time, featuring rare archival materials and insights from experts such as Edgar Feuchtwanger, historian and author of 'Hitler, My Neighbor: Memories of a Jewish Childhood'; Meike Hoffmann, expert on degenerate art and the Gurlitt affair, lead author of 'Hitler's Art Dealer: Hildebrand Gurlitt'; and Nina Zimmer, director of the Kunstmuseum Bern – Zentrum Paul Klee and co-curator of the Gurlitt exhibition in Bern.
