Sky Arte Documentary Explores Picasso's Early Years

A new documentary titled 'Il giovane Picasso' (The Young Picasso) will air on Sky Arte on Saturday, December 21. Directed by Phil Grabsky, the film traces the artist's journey from promising youth to international genius, focusing on his formative years in Málaga, Barcelona, and Paris. Born in Málaga on October 25, 1881, Picasso painted his first work at age eight, depicting a bullfight. After enrolling at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, he found a stimulating environment for his art. Intending to move to London, he instead settled in Paris, which became pivotal for his career. The documentary features Olivier Widmaier Picasso, the artist's grandson, and includes insights from art historians and curators, as well as letters to friends and lovers. It was produced in collaboration with five major European museums: Museo Picasso and Fundación Picasso-Museo Casa Natal in Málaga; Museu Picasso de Barcelona, housing the largest collection of his early works; Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona; and Musée national Picasso in Paris. The film primarily covers Picasso's Blue and Rose periods but also examines his earlier years. It concludes at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' has been displayed since the 1930s.
